The Elephant

Torquay, Devon

Head to the English Riviera for the “best value Michelin-starred lunch in the UK”

Chef Simon Hulstone has held a Michelin star at his waterside restaurant that he runs with wife Katy since 2005 and it has now become a well established part of Torquay.

There are two key pillars to The Elephant – the use of the best local and seasonal ingredients and offering value for money. Both are achieved thanks to the restaurant’s own farm in nearby Brixham, from where it sources much of its produce and which gives Hulstone the freedom to change his menus based on what’s available.

The restaurant serves an à la carte and tasting menu as well as a set lunch menu which, at £21.50 for two courses and £24.95 for three, it says is the best value Michelin-starred lunch in the UK. Children are also well looked after here. As a father of three, Hulstone says he tries to get his children to try new foods and healthier alternatives, which is reflected in the restaurant’s children’s menu that incorporates seasonal and local produce. Remarkably for a Michelin starred restaurant, children under 12 can choose a drink, main course and dessert for just £6.95, making it cheaper than most high street restaurant chains.

The Hulstones live above the restaurant and their daughters can sometimes be found helping out in the kitchen, making The Elephant a true family affair. This is reflected in the bright and welcoming dining room they have created that affords views over Torquay Harbour. A true gem of the English Riviera.
