Alexis Noble’s Stoke Newington neighbourhood restaurant is a celebration of a nomadic approach to cooking

Australian chef Alexis Noble’s evocatively named restaurant Wander is inspired by her travels through America, Asia and Europe as well as that of her team, and also of their food memories and culinary experiments – although she sums up her food as being ‘Australian, yummy and surprising’.

Wander serves an ever-changing menu of seasonal dishes that have been designed to share and which showcase the best quality produce from the small-scale suppliers that the restaurant uses. Dishes are creative and bold, with Noble unafraid to bring various elements from her culinary travels together on one dish for an impactful dining experience – creations of mortadella topped with kimchi and grated pistachio; and mussels with nduja, roasted peppers, and Thai basil such examples.

There’s also a real sense of fun to Wander, not just through Noble’s experimental cooking but also the homespun feel of the restaurant itself. The unassuming dining room, which was largely refitted by Noble herself, who sanded and stripped each table and painted the walls, has a character and warmth that more highly-polished restaurants would crave.

Wander is a passion project that has captured the hearts of locals and people from further afield – a travelling inspired destination that is itself worthy of a journey.
