Chef James Ferguson and his partner and front-of-house counterpart Alethea Palmer took over the 17th-century Kinneuchar Inn in 2019, relocating from London to the East Neuk of Fife. Both had previously worked at east London institution Rochelle Canteen, with Ferguson also having cooked under Gordon Ramsay and Angela Hartnett.
Drawn to the area's abundance of top-quality produce and the opportunity to work closely with Balcaskie Estate, the couple saw the potential to create something rooted in place and produce.
The Kinneuchar Inn is known for its good-value daily-changing à la carte menu that celebrates seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, from whole-carcass meat and game to just-picked vegetables and seafood from nearby Pittenweem. The cooking is stripped-back and flavour-led, with dishes including East Neuk radicchio, stilton, pickled pears and walnuts; quince-glazed ham and piccalilli; and braised Cornish octopus with fennel, orzo and aioli.
The cooking here is as stylish as it is ambitious, but the Kinneuchar Inn remains down-to-earth. Nothing exemplifies this more than its cult-favourite Kinneuchar Fried Chicken Mondays, when its towering fried chicken buns sell out fast.
