Launched as a permanent space in 2024 following years as a pop-up and residency, Plates is a high-end plant-based restaurant that challenges expectations around vegan cuisine (it makes a point of avoiding the V word). Located within a gated mews off Old Street, the 25-cover space offers two tasting menus of bold, boundary-pushing dishes that reflect chef Kirk Haworth’s deep personal and professional journey.
Haworth, who trained under some of the UK’s top chefs, including Sat Bains and under his father Nigel at Northcote, transitioned to a plant-based approach after being diagnosed with Lyme disease. Finding relief through nutrition, he’s since focused on developing a style of cooking that is both original and healthy.
The menu includes intricate dishes like English tomatoes with house-made ricotta and shiso, or a cacao gateaux with coconut blossom ice cream and sour cherry. Wines are curated by Alexandra Price and organised by European vegetation zones, while cocktails play with botanicals and layered flavours.
With its understated design, studio kitchen, and ambitious creative direction, Plates stands out as one of the UK's most progressive plant-based restaurants.
